The Leathered Palm
Without centuries of history and establishment in place, the inhabitants of Kul De’Has focused on rebuilding their parcels of land. Over time people began traveling to other parts of the world for trade and travel. The roads that began to form were not a part of any one nation, so no one nation rose to protect or govern them. In this, an organization arose to fill the power vacuum. Highwaymen that ruled the open roads. The Leathered Palm do not identify as a criminal organization. They simply live by a different code. These are our lands. Conduct your business in accordance with our ordinances and we will be there to assist. Cross us…… and we may need to remind you why that was not a sound decision.
Their reputation as a criminal organization, is shouted by many and used as a smear campaign for those who they have slighted in the past. Really it is a government of the traveler. Merchants who know better, sanction their travel ahead of time with local agencies to keep the roads safe and clear for their journeys. Wealthy travelers may do the same, some even going so far as to hire escorts from within the organization to act as guides and bodyguards.
Members may recognize each other on the road by an embossed crest on the palm of the right glove. When riding up to one another, they give a signal that ends with the right hand up with an open palm, presenting the insignia to the other party. Certain symbols designate rank and area of authority. Although it may seem easy to replicate and forge, the crests are highly detailed and enchanted. Upon proximity to a true crest, if a forged insignia is presented during the opening greeting, it will glow red-hot dealing 2d6 fire damage as it bursts into flame. The penalty of impersonation can be steep.
Anyone who crosses The Palm is dealt with in a similar fashion. Offenders are presented to Management where they may be stripped of any goods acquired and branded to show their transgressions. Thus, removing their protection on the roadways and marking them to any other traveler or squadron as fair game. At this point, most forgo travel in any form and stick to their respected homes. However, some have been known to attempt operation and travel and that is where the Squadrons come into play.
The Leathered Palm operates in a series of units and squadrons. There is a central hierarchy that deploys the squadrons as need be. Although there are scuffles that occur on the road, rarely do they occur without the knowledge or consent of The Palm. Nor do they occur at the hands of anyone other than these squadrons. These squadrons do, on occasion, serve as messengers or escorts. Their main responsibility is to find rogue bands of thieves and bandits and deal with them accordingly.
